Teyana Taylor makes a major comeback by delivering her first album in five years.
On Friday, August 22, the versatile singer-actress dropped her fourth studio album, Escape Room, via TaylorMade Enterprises/Def Jam Recordings. Her latest project contains 22 tracks in total including collaborations with Jill Scott, Tyla, Lucky Daye, Tasha Smith, Kaytranada and her daughters, Junie and Rue Rose Shumpert. Taylor also enlisted esteemed actresses Sarah Paulson, Issa Rae, Regina King, Taraji P. Henson, Jodie Turner-Smith, La La Anthony, Niecy Nash-Betts, and Kerry Washington to narrate portions of the album. Additionally, she called on producers like The Runners and Rico Love to help craft the overall sound of the album.
“I’ve returned now in a time when I get to come back on my terms," she told Billboard about coming out of retirement. "And that was important for me because … I don’t like to be stuck in a box. I don’t want to be stuck in one room. I’m a Glade plug-in: I’m going to plug in wherever I see a socket, wherever I see an outlet."
Teyana Taylor previously bowed out of the music industry following the release of her 2020 LP The Album. Since then, Taylor has focused on serving as a creative director for numerous major artists, her acting career, and her family. She returned to the studio for the first time since she retired to appear on Diddy's The Love Album: Off The Grid and later appeared on Rick Ross and Meek Mill's joint album Too Good To Be True.
Teyana Taylor's new project is also a visual album. Taylor's production company, known as The Aunties, teamed up with Amazon Prime to debut her new short film called Escape Room. She previously debuted the film's trailer starring her new boyfriend, Aaron Pierre, back in May. The film premieres on Amazon Prime at 8 p.m. tonight.
