Lil Zay Osama has been sentenced to serve time in a federal prison after he was convicted of leaving a loaded machine gun in an Uber.
On Thursday, November 7, the Chicago native, born Isaiah Dukes, was sentenced to 14 months in a federal prison and ordered to pay a $10,000 fine. According to the U.S. Attorney's Office of the Eastern District of New York, the 27-year-old was indicted in January for possession of a machine gun after the rapper accidentally left the loaded weapon in the backseat of an Uber he used in 2022. He pleaded guilty to the crime back in May.
“The defendant knowingly carried a fully automatic weapon, a pistol with a switch device whose only purpose is to make a dangerous weapon all the more deadly – and then carelessly left that gun in the back of a rideshare,” said United States Attorney Breon Peace. “Today’s sentence serves as a warning that those who possess illegal guns, particularly with switches that convert those guns into machineguns, will be held accountable for their actions and for the danger they pose to our community.”
In September 2022, Lil Zay Osama and his crew took an Uber to a recording studio in Queens, N.Y. While he was in the backseat, the driver reportedly noticed that Dukes had a loaded weapon and saw it in the backseat after the rapper exited the vehicle. The pistol in question was reportedly modified with a "switch" to make it operate like a machine gun. The driver called the police and identified Dukes.
Dukes was arrested and charged the next day. Shortly afterward, his case was dismissed without prejudice. Unfortunately, prosecutors doubled back and indicted him in January 2024 for possession of a machine gun and possession of an unregistered firearm. At the time, Dukes was already in custody in Illinois for multiple gun charges that related to a separate incident in which he was found with a modified firearm.
The incident occurred in December 2023 in his home state. Police were informed that Dukes was riding around in a blue Dodge Charger that was allegedly used in a robbery in New York City. Police attempted to pull him over, but he took off and a chase ensued. After police caught him, Lil Zay Osama was found with a loaded Glock 19 with a 50-round drum magazine and a defaced serial number. They also discovered a loaded Glock 29 with a laser, an extended magazine, and a switch that turned it into a machine gun. He also wore a $90,000 necklace that was connected to the robbery in New York City.
Lil Zay Osama just dropped projects like The Streets Calling My Name and The Streets Calling My Name, Pt. 2. Shortly after his sentence was announced, the rapper took to Instagram to react. See what he had to say below.
